ASCE OC/SEI Branch May Luncheon - Mid-Coast Corridor Transit Project (10:30 am)

From Calendar: OC YMF

Location: The Center Club650 Town Center Drive, Costa Mesa, CA 92626

Details: TOPIC - Mid-Coast Corridor Transit Project The ASCE Orange County Branch invites you to attend the May Luncheon featuring an overview of the Mid-Coast Corridor Transit Project as presented by Pooya Haddadi, Supervising Bridge Engineer at WSP and Dan Heiman, Project Executive at Skanska USA Civil.   The Mid-Coast Corridor Transit Project (MCCTP) is the largest transit infrastructure project currently under construction in San Diego, California. The project will provide an 11-mile light rail transit (LRT) link between downtown San Diego and the University Towne Center (UTC) business and education center, including the University of California San Diego (UCSD) campus. The $2.2B project is being delivered in a partially shared corridor by a single contractor, encompassing two other major projects to double-track freight and passenger rail in the region. The corridor includes complex river crossings, seismic fault crossings, multiple bridges and viaducts over highway and local streets.   One of three major viaducts within the MCCTP is the 1.1 mile Genesee Viaduct. The viaduct runs in the median of Genesee Avenue, a six-lane arterial road with dense concentrations of residential, business and institutional land use. It was critical to minimize impacts to the vehicular arterial during construction, including footprint within the median, and maintaining traffic at intersections within the dense urban area. The Genesee Viaduct will be the first curved spliced precast U girder bridge in California supporting LRT.   This project is being delivered through Construction Manager General Contractor (CMGC) approach. For this viaduct, innovative design and construction methods were incorporated by the design and the CMGC team to accelerate the construction time, improve design quality and reduce construction cost. This presentation will focus on an overview of design features, CMGC interaction during the design, and key decisions made by design and CMGC team to improve and accelerate the project delivery from design through construction.         About The Speakers:  Pooya HaddidiSupervising Bridge Engineer, WSP Pooya Haddadi is a supervising bridge engineer at WSP and leads the bridges and structures group in San Bernardino.
