| Details | Topic: OC EWRI Technical Tour - Big Canyon Water Quality and Restoration Project Speaker: Bob Stein, Assistant City Engineer, City of Newport Beach Bob is a civil design engineer and manager for the City’s watershed protection and restoration program. The program grapples with emerging environmental issues involving groundwater exfiltration, canyon destabilization, pollutant source tracking, mitigating non-point source pollution, and meaningful integrated restoration planning. He completed the civil engineering doctoral program at UCI in 2014. Amanda Swanson, Restoration Coordinator, Newport Bay Conservancy Amanda has over five years of experience in plant, soil and restoration ecology and received a Ph.D. in Plant Biology from UC Riverside in 2017. Her work has largely focused on the impacts of human disturbances on plants and soils and how habitat restoration facilitates recovery of ecosystems. With the Newport Bay Conservancy, she has been working on community-based restoration and invasive plant management in Upper Newport Bay, public outreach and education, and strengthening partnerships to improve land management at a regional scale. Tour: The site walk begins at Back Bay Drive and will travel to the 6-acre restoration area located adjacent to Jamboree Road to view the creek diversion, creek and flood plain modification, groundwater capture point, and bio-infiltration basin. Project design garnered ACEC national recognition in 2018. During the walk, project planning for restoration of the adjacent 24 acres can be discussed. Time: Lunch @ 11:30 am; Program ends @ 1:30 pm Location: Back Bay Drive Parking Lot. Take Jamboree Road to San Joaquin Hills Road and make right on the Mountain to The Sea Trail & Bikeway to the parking lot, Newport Bay Marine Protected Area.
