| Details | Topic: Water Quality & Sustainability: A look at Santa Ana's Water System Speakers: Nabil Saba, Water Resources Manager, City of Santa Ana Public Works Agency Nabil Saba is Water Resources Manager for the City of Santa Ana Public Works Agency. He has dedicated his entire career, which spans more than 23 years, to the maintenance, operation, engineering, management and regulation of large wastewater and water systems. A professional civil engineer registered with the State of California, he is certified at the highest levels in both water distribution and water treatment by the State Water Resources Control Board. In his leadership role, Mr. Saba is responsible for directing and controlling the daily water and sewer operations for Santa Ana, overseeing a staff of 65 and an annual budget of $62 million. He identifies, implements and manages all construction projects, including assessing and managing long range planning for future water supply. In addition to presenting the division’s initiatives to City Council members, other elected officials and community leaders, he creates strategic partnerships with other water agencies and serves as the liaison between the City and various public agency groups including Metropolitan Water District’s (MWD) Member Agency Managers Group and Orange County Water District (OCWD) Producers Group, providing support to the board representatives. Mr. Saba has led a number of strategic initiatives to create new revenue sources for the City as well as improve the efficiency and long-term sustainability of its water delivery system. These construction and asset management projects, along with several innovative outreach campaigns, have earned industry-wide recognition for the City’s resource efficiency, conservation and community service. Synopsis: Santa Ana’s Water Resources Division delivers 12.5 billion gallons of water to residents each year. Approximately 70% of Santa Ana’s water supply comes from groundwater which is stored in one of the area’s best managed aquifers and then pumped to the surface by 20 city-owned wells. The remaining is imported water purchased from the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD). This presentation will look at the uniqueness, management and challenges of Santa Ana’s water system, including what the Water Resources Division is doing to ensure its long-term reliability and sustainability.
