Pilot-Scale Demonstration of Biological Denitrification of Groundwater

Award

Description

In partnership with the Water Research Foundation and WQTS Inc., the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works, Waterworks Districts, conducted a pilot study that successfully demonstrated the use of natural bacteria to remove nitrate from ground water in an engineered biological denitrification treatment system designed to meet strict drinking water standards. BDN treatment has no adverse environmental impacts, compared to ion exchange or reverse osmosis,
which generate highly saline waste streams that require disposal.
