The Leo J. Vander Lans Expansion Project

Award

Description

The Water Replenishment District of Southern California (WRD) owns and operates the Leo J. Vander Lans Water Treatment Facility (LVLWTF) located in Long Beach, California. The facility, with a capacity of 3 mgd, uses fine screening, microfiltration (MF), reverse osmosis (RO) and ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation to reclaim tertiary wastewater effluent from the nearby Long Beach Water Reclamation Facility to a quality suitable for direct groundwater injection and for the purpose of preventing seawater intrusion into the Central groundwater basin.  As one of the key projects under the WRD’s WIN program, the WRD has expanded the LVLWTF from 3 to 8 mgd in order to provide highly purified recycled water to satisfy 100-percent demand of groundwater replenishment at the Alamitos Seawater Intrusion Barrier.  The WRD has received substantial funding for the expansion project from the federal Title XVI Grant as well as the California Proposition 84 Grant.
