County of Kern Information Technology Services Building

Award

Description

The County of Kern’s new Information Technology Services Building was constructed to house the County’s critical computer storage systems that were previously housed in a building that lies within the local 100-year floodplain.  The new building is located just west of the County of Kern’s Emergency Call Center in northeast Bakersfield near Mt. Vernon Avenue and Panorama Drive.  The new building is 27,291 square feet of usable space and 5,021 square feet of crawl space.  The building is designed to house the computer storage systems and protect them from loss of power supply, from heat, and from water damage due to flooding.  It was designed as a critical facility and constructed as a steel framed building with concrete filled decks and metal stud framing.  The building has a height of 36 feet above the finished floor and 10 feet below the finished floor for a crawl space.  The crawl space was designed for easy maintenance of the electrical, data, and HVAC raceways and for future expansion needs.  The electrical power service to the building is from two separate PG&E power sources and includes a 800kW diesel back up generator for emergency power. The building’s structure was constructed with 812 tons of structural steel, 24,000 bolts, and over 19,000 hours fabrication labor.  The cost of the project was $15.2 million.
