I-10/Monterey Avenue Interchange Project

Award

Description

As a pivotal project to the Coachella Valley Corridor, this project consisted of the construction of a new loop entrance ramp from Monterey Avenue to westbound I-10.  This loop ramp now provides a free flow condition for traffic entering the westbound I-10 from northbound Monterey Avenue and eliminated the existing northbound dual left turn pocket to the existing westbound on-ramp.  The loop ramp provides improved traffic flow along Monterey Avenue without affecting operation of the freeway by joining the future fourth lane of ht westbound I-10 needing to construct a tie-back wall underneath the bridge to make room.  To accommodate the new loop ramp, the westbound exit ramp was realigned to provide a hook exit ramp east of Monterey Avenue along Varner Road.  The existing traffic signal at the intersection of Monterey Avenue and the westbound exit ramp was removed, since both the left turn movements were eliminated at this intersection.  Along with the removal of the intersection at the northbound ramp termini, the southbound Monterey Avenue left turn lanes to eastbound I-10 were lengthened to provide sufficient stacking for future traffic volumes.  A soundwall along the adjacent Varner Road was also constructed to protect homes to North, which required relocation of a driveway and a need for maintenance access.
