Universal City Pedestrian Bridge

Award

Description

The Universal City Station Pedestrian Bridge connects Metro’s Universal City Red Line Station with NBC Universal’s Tram Stop and provides a safe passage for the pedestrians crossing Lankershim Boulevard. The Bridge addresses pedestrian safety across Lankershim Boulevard and reduces traffic congestion by providing smooth traffic flow at the intersection. Some of the salient features of the 400-feet long bridge include elevators, escalators, and the stairs. The bridge structural framing consists of three-dimensional open structural steel truss with round and rectangular HSS members. The cross section of the bridge is in the form of an inverted triangle having a depth of 20’ and a width of 15’. The bridge is supported at each corner by an elevator tower and stair/escalator framing supports. Specially designed Buckling Restrained Braced (BRB) frames are installed at the elevator towers to resist the lateral wind and seismic forces. The project also includes hardscape plaza and landscaping.
