Description

Douglas J. Sereno, P.E., is retired as the Director of Program Management at the Port of Long Beach, California.  Previously, he was a Vice-President with the international consulting firm, MWH Global (now part of Stantec).  At the Port of Long Beach, Mr. Sereno oversaw the Port’s $4.5B Capital Improvement and Development Program.  Significant projects under his direction were the $1.3 billion Middle Harbor Redevelopment Program, the $1.6 billion Gerald Desmond Bridge Replacement Program, the $1 billion Port-wide Rail Program, the $200 million Fire Safety and Security Program, the $100 million Shore-to-Ship Power Program and the Port’s new $225M Administration Building.  He led the Port’s sustainable development efforts under which every Port project is reviewed and developed by sustainable infrastructure principles and guidelines.  He also instituted the Port’s Green Building Program which certified 10 U.S. Green Building Council Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) structures. 

During his 15 years with MWH, Mr. Sereno managed the company’s program management office for the $500 million City of Los Angeles Wastewater Program at the Hyperion Treatment Plant. 

Mr. Sereno holds both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Civil Engineering from Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah.  He was awarded the 2015 Alumni Achievement Award by BYU’s Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering and Technology.
 
He is a Registered Engineer in the State of California.  He is the past chair of ASCE’s Committee on Sustainability and is a Diplomate in Port Engineering with the Academy of Coasts, Oceans, Ports and Navigation Engineering.  He was previously credentialed as an Envision Sustainability Professional (ENV-SP) by the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI) and served on the ISI Envision Review Board for three years.  In March 2014, Mr. Sereno was elected a Fellow to the American Society of Civil Engineers and in 2016, he was awarded the William S. Wisely American Civil Engineer Award by ASCE for his work on sustainable development.

During retirement, Mr. Sereno continues working with ASCE in the Orange County Branch’s Mentoring Program and as a member of the MLAB Life Member Forum.  In his free time, he continues involvement with sustainability issues as a volunteer with the American Red Cross and the US Green Building Council – California.
