Queen Mary Preservation and Olympic Readiness Project

Historical Renovation Project

Description

The RMS Queen Mary, Long Beach’s iconic ocean liner, has undergone essential structural stabilization after decades of deterioration and financial strain. City-directed efforts included the removal of deteriorated lifeboats to alleviate localized hull stresses, reinforcement of primary framing elements, selective replacement of steel plating, and shoring of weakened bulkheads. Additionally, a modern flood-detection and bilge pumping system, supported by a dedicated 650 KVA emergency generator, was installed to provide redundant dewatering capacity independent of the vessel’s main power. These measures have reestablished baseline structural safety and permitted the ship’s reopening for public tours and limited events. In preparation for the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Queen Mary is being advanced as a premier waterfront attraction and activation venue to accommodate heightened visitor demand in Long Beach. Ongoing preservation and phased capital improvements will continue to safeguard long-term structural integrity, public accessibility, and overall sustainability.
