The Loynes Drive Complete Streets Project
Award
Bikeways & Trails Project
Description
The City of Long Beach is embarking on a transformative Complete Streets project to construct a Class IV separated bicycle lane (curb-protected bike lane) on Loynes Drive, spanning from Bellflower Boulevard to Pacific Coast Highway (CA-1). This initiative aims to enhance road safety, reduce speeding, and provide better access to Jack Nichol, Marina Vista, and Channel View parks for pedestrians and cyclists. The protected Class IV bike lane ensures safe access for school children biking to School. Work includes replacing existing lane markings, updating signage, adding high-contrast crosswalks, installing new bike lanes with concrete buffers, resurfacing the asphalt roadway, adding ADA-compliant ramps, and repairing sidewalks to meet ADA guidelines. The new curb-protected bike lanes will extend from Bellflower Boulevard to Bixby Village Drive, ensuring comprehensive improvements along the corridor.
In addition to improving safety and accessibility, this project is a key component of the city’s broader strategy to promote sustainable and eco-friendly transportation options. By providing dedicated and protected bike lanes, the city encourages more residents to choose cycling over driving, thereby reducing traffic congestion and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. This aligns with Long Beach’s commitment to environmental stewardship and its goals for a greener, more sustainable urban landscape.
Furthermore, the project will have significant community benefits, fostering a sense of connectivity and promoting an active lifestyle among residents. The improved infrastructure will make it easier for people to access recreational areas, engage in outdoor activities, and commute using non-motorized modes of transportation. The curb-protected bike lanes will also enhance the overall aesthetic of Loynes Drive, creating a more pleasant and inviting environment for all users. This project underscores the City of Long Beach’s dedication to creating a safer, healthier, and more vibrant community.
